Narrative 

The Evolution of Operating Systems

 

       The Operating systems (OS), it is itself a software that is designed to communicate and work with the hardware which allows other programs to work/run on it. It is made with system software and fundamental files that the computer needs to boot up and function. A couple of Different operating systems are Windows OS, Mac OS, Apple IOS, Google’s Android OS and Linux which have a variety of operating systems.

      When we talk about OS, we have to go back to the past to actually see how evolution took place. This system first had to be build and then the OS were developed for it. The early systems were developed in the 1950's, followed by Simple Batch Systems in the 1960's, Multi programmed Batch Systems in 1970's, Personal/Desktops computer were developed in the 1980's, then there comes the big step of Multiprocessor systems in the 1980's with Networked-Distributed systems and then the web-based systems in the 1990's. These were the major development in system where the OS has a place in it and gives a meaning to these systems. 

     

     This is only the surface of its possibility, with this is what came the software OS i.e the one we use every day. Based on these we have Windows, Linus(Android, Chrome, Ubuntu,….), Unix (Apple IOS and Mac-OS,....). The OS grows year by year with much more improvement, security, capability, and processing power. 

 

      GM-NAA I/O was the first input/output system designed for IBM 704 computer of General Motors and North American Aviation. This was a huge accomplishment at that time because it was automatically executing a new program once the one finished executing. This was a stepping stone for other companies to imagine what they can do and there it began the race of technological advancement in OS. 

Now let's talk about how Windows OS and Mac OS evolved with their first launch to today.

      Windows 1.0 OS was released in 1985 which was a graphical interface, with MS-DOS software existing in it. Later Windows 2.0 was made which could overlap each other and had minimize, maximize and zooming and more functionality. Then came Windows 3.0, then 3.1 and the big change Windows 95. It was an amazing development, it had a plug and play peripheral and had internet explorer developed for that. It included IE, Netscape Navigator, and NCSA Mosaic and soon on. Soon Windows 98 was released with much-improved functionality.  Then Windows me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, then one of the biggest was windows 7, This changed the whole world. This provided an enormous gaming and software platform with versatile possibilities and modifications that could be made. Windows 8 wasn’t the biggest hit, but window 10 is today the biggest hit ever with amazing functionality and fast speed.

      Let’s Move to Mac OS, The first one was Mac OS X operating system noteworthy for its UNIX architecture. Mac OS X has been known for its simplicity and good aesthetic interface, advanced technology and much more. Next one was OS X Cheetah with Terminal, Mail and more software. Then comes OS X Puma with CD Burning, IDVD. After that it was OS X Jaguar, then OS X Panther had I-chat, finder. Then OS X Tiger which had Safari and more stuff was developed, OS X Leopard, then OS X Snow Leopard which contained much better resolution and 3-D icons. OS X Lion was made with multi-touch gestures, OS X Mountain Lion with airplay, Game Center, apps like Facebook, OS X  Mavericks with I cloud keychain, Ibook and Facetime were developed and enhanced in the OS, OS X Yosemite, El Capitan, OS X Sierra with voice-activated Siri, OS X Mojave with improved group Facetime and security-enhanced plus this OS is what I have updated to for my Mac.

      Linux OS was first heard of in 1991, this was most popular for open source operating system worldwide. It got a rapid success and changed the world in many ways. Linux is everywhere. Without the world of open source and Linux, we would not have the kind of scale to run a cloud. Linux has provided a low-cost base platform on which to run large internet applications, mainly as an alternative to proprietary Unix systems.

Our web servers were pretty low-powered machines, but they had 100% up time on Linux. Android mobile platform brought Linux to more than a billion devices and Google uses Linux, from phone to tv to lot of electronic devices has Linux running in it. Linux is nearly in every organization in one form or another, Windows servers persist in most companies, and Windows still has the lion’s share of the corporate and personal desktop market with Linux.
